Awa (Kava-Kava)
They say you can not be angry after consuming awa. It puts you in a very mellow and relaxed mood. It also induces sleep, lowers blood pressure, numbs the mouth, relieves muscle spasms, and acts as a diuretic promoting urination. It is traditionally served to guests to your home, and at any social occasion where people are coming together ( weddings, funerals, reunions, blessings, negotiations, etc.).
While it alters your mood, it is said to keep you alert and not impair mental function. Care should be taken however with driving and operating dangerous machinery while under the influence of Awa.
Traditional Cold Press Method
Place one ounce of Awa in a cloth or cheese cloth bag or packet, Soak in 4 cups water or coconut juice for at least 10 minutes. Squeeze or wring out awa, letting the juice fall back with the rest of the liquid. Put bag of awa back into the juice to soak up more, and wring out again. Repeat this process until mixture squeezed out of bag runs clear, usually a dozen times or more.
Simmering Method
(My personal favorite)Add one ounce of Awa to 4 to 8 cups water. Boil at low boil for 15 minutes, drain off and keep liquid. Add more water boil again for 30 minutes more, mix with other liquid.
Chewing Method
Place a pinch of Awa between cheek and gum, much as one would chewing tobacco. Chew gently and suck out juice as you go.
Tincture Method
Add one or more ounces of awa to a bottle of liquor, any kind will due but tequila and vodka are most often used. Shake bottle and let stand in a dark place for two weeks or longer (the longer the better), shake every week or so
